Self Build loadbearing strawbale extension and low-carbon retrofit with strawbale wrapping. This unusual building was built in 2014 in Bridport, Dorset. It comprises both a new extension in loadbearing straw AND the existing 1960s bungalow wrapped with external insulation in the form of strawbales – straw ‘wrap’. This self-build project by John Butler was designed by Straw Works and John to fit in with the existing street-scene in a row of originally-identical bungalows, the main visible difference being sedum and herb roof to the extension. Overall internal area on completion is 110m2. John is a sustainability consultant qualified in Passivhaus design.
